ASSISTING STUDENTS
■ Complete agreement with the proposal to appoint, joint.relationship committees at hospitals to further the training of final-year medical students was voiced in reports presented to the North . Canterbury Hospital Board on Wednesday (states "The Press"). la .conjunction with the University of Otago, recognised hospitals have been co-opef atihg for' some years in a scheme to assist students to complete their education, particularly on the practical ( side, but now the dean of the medical faculty of -. Otago (Dr. C. E. Hercus) has proposed administrative improvements to the scheme, including the establishment of the joint committees at each hospital.
' The proposed modifications were explained in a letter to the board by. Dr. Hercus. It is suggested that: .
- The hospital boards in Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland agree to set up" joint relationship committees for the, purpose of advising the university on the appointment of teachers within the recognised hospital,'on all financial matters involved in teaching, and such other' matters of policy affecting teaching within ~the recognised hospital as may arise from, time to time; the joint relationship committee to consist of the chairman of the hospital board and one other representative elected by the board; two'members1 elected-by the honorary medical staff, the medical superintendent, arid the sub-dean, if these two offices do" not correspond.
The hospital boards agree to permit teaching duties to be carried out if required by all members of their medical staff, stipendiary and honorary. : ■
The hospital board permit one of their1 senior stipendiary officers to accept- the appointment of sub-dean: of the recognised hospital and to receive such emolument as may be attached to this position.
The hospital board agree to the university setting up a branch of the medical faculty in the recognised hospital, the faculty to consist of the lecturers and tutors in the various subjects taught in the hospital, the subdean to act as convener and chairman, of the faculty. ~»
The dean of the medical faculty be ex-officio member of the joint relationship committee and the faculty, of the recognised hospital, and the subdean and hospital faculty to be members of the medical faculty^ of Otaga University. ".' ' "\
The hospital committee, in its report to the board, stated that practically all the recommendations had been carried out since 1926, when the board became a recognised hospital of the University National Medical School, Proposals were being considered, the report indicated, for the necessary appointments to the joint relationship committee. The hospital committee was fully in accord with the proposals made. .
