NAVAL VISIT
NEW AMERICAN DESTROYERS

AUCKLAND, This Day
The 'American destroyers Preston and-Smith arrived, this morning and berthed at the naval base. These vessels were launched m April last year. They are the most modern vessels of their type in the United States fleet and are still in the official secrets list. No cameras are allowed on board. , The captains paid official calls on Commander Tinley on the Philomel. The Preston and : Smith were commissioned at San Francisco in October. After their trials they left for Honolulu, Pago Pago, and Auckland. They leave on Thursday next for Sydney. Each is armed with-, five sitr guns and twelve torpedo tubes, and. is capable of 35- knots. Each has two depth-charge chutes at the stern and each carries nine officers and .162 ratings. Hospitality has been arranged by the Government and the citizens of Auckland.
