INTER-CLUB MATCHES.

Owing to the unfavourable weather conditions on Tuesday, all inter-club matches were postponed. WELLINGTON TOURNAMENT. The Wellington Association tournament concluded "on Saturday ; last in beautiful ;weather. The last event to be played was the. final of the club pairs. . ; ' . ' Mrs. W. S. Austin, president of the Wellington Association, presented the trophies won during the tournament. Mrs. Austin thanked all the clubs who had given up their lawns for the tournament, and also those who had looked after the catering. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Boocock, who had so ably managed the tournament. .Oh behalf of Mrs. Caldow, official referee, Mrs. Austin thanked all the referees for their assistance during the tournament. . At the conclusion of the presentation of trophies a small gift was handed to Mrs. Boocock in recognition of her untiring services in running the tournament. Intermediate: Mrs. Toms (Karori); Mrs. Miller (Ngaroma). runner-up. B grade: Mrs. Francis (Island, Bay); Mrs. August (Woburn); runner-up. v CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS EVENT. The A grade finals were played between .Mrs. Sargisson (Ngaroma) and Mrs. Bock (Hutt), and the contest was decided in two. straight games. Mrs. Bock, who had been playing exceedingly well during the tournament, was not playing up to her usual standard, while Mrs. Sargisson was right on form. Her long shooting was excellent, as also was her break play, and she make breaks, of seven, eight, and nine in the two games, the score being 26-10 and 26-11. ■ INTERMEDIATE CHAMPION. In the final for the intermediate championship, Mrs. Toms , ■ (Karori) played Mrs. Miller (Ngaroma). Mrs. Miller, who has . played . remarkably well during the tournament, was showing signs of tiredness ;and not playing up to her usual standard, while Mrs. Toms was well 'on her game. In the second game Mrs. Toms played a perfect break of nine. The 'final scores were in favour of Mrs. Toms, 26-15, 26-8. B GRADE. Mrs. Francis (Island Bay) defeated Mrs. August (Woburn). These players were very evenly matched, the contest going to three games, Mrs. August winning the first by two points, Mrs. Francis winning' the last two, 26-13, 26-15. In the final of the club pairs between W. Tye and Mrs. Mathewson (Kelburn) and Mesdames Manton and Ross (Wellington), .all four players were playing well,' each making substantial breaks, but it was not until the latter stages. of the game that excitement prevailed. In pass rolling Mrs. Mathewson accidentally pegged out her ball, leaving her partner with rover hoop to make. Mrs. Manton made several more points, and Mrs. Ross also negotiated four back, but in attempting penultimate left a good open shot for Tye, who hit in and finished 26-21. Mr. Tye and Mrs. Mathewson also hold the North Island championship doubles. ' ; WANGANUI TOURNAMENT. ' Perfect weather favoured the opening of the Wanganui tourney last Monday, where 85 competitors gathered to take part in one of the best programmes submitted by any provincial district. The entries total 260, being almost equivalent to those of the North Island championships. Play was commenced with the handicap doubles, in which some good games were witnessed, all-round breaks being recorded on many of the lawns, which are fairly fast and very even. In the open championship game between. Mrs. Amies (Wanganui) and Mrs.''Kirk (Wanganui), Mrs. Amies won the toss and made a point, after which Mrs. Kirk hit in and also scored. Mrs. Amies secured control, and after failing at No. 3 continued the break to penultimate, unsuccessfully wiring at the peg. Mrs. Kirk on this advantage made a break to four back. In-and-out play followed, but Mrs. Amies maintained control, winning a good game, 26-12. With Mrs. Caldow's balls laid for a rush to No. 1, Mrs. Jarvie hit in, but balked at No. 4, letting in her opponent, who made a break to four back, wiring at No. 1. In the next turn Mrs. Caldow made- an all-round break with the backward ball, finishing 26-3. In the handicap doubles game between Mrs. Jarvie and D. Allan (Wanganui) and J. Hindman and Miss Main (Waipukurau), Mrs. Jarvie' hit in early in the game, going to penultimate in one turn, and with her partner kept control practically throughout, the game ending 26-6. The annual Southern Hawke's Bay croquet tournament was opened on Monday last on the Rangatira Club's lawns in ideal weather. Following are some of the results: — Open Championship.—Mrs. Miller beat Miss McKenzie (Hataitai), 26-12; Mrs. Mitchell (Napier) beat Mrs. Soundy, 26-13; Mrs. Carrington beat Mrs. Poison (Masterton), 26-20. Handicap ■ Singles.—Mrs. Mitchell beat Mrs. Lindsay (Kelburn), 26-15; Miss McKenzie beat Mrs. Glass (Dannevirke), 26-22. HITTING THE HOOP. When the back -of the mallet strikes the hoop when striking or taking aim, this is not a foul and unless the ball rebounds on the mallet is a clean shot. At one time this was a penalty shot; but has now been omitted from the list of fouls. PERSONAL. Mesdames Leadbeater, Caldow, McKenzie, Lowery, Walker, Tye, Cadwallader, and Miss D. McKenzie are taking part in the Wanganui tournament. Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Gibbs (Patea) are competitors in the Wanganui tournament. Mesdames Poison (Masterton), Higgins (Seatoun), Lindsay (Kelburn), and Miss McKenzie (Hataitai) are taking part in the Southern Hawke's Bay tournament at Dannevirke^. Mr. and Mrs. Mouat (Waimarie) intend leaving next week to take part in the Taranaki tournament at New Plymouth.
