WHERE BEARS REMAIN

In the Eastern Carpathians of Poland, there still exist about 300. bears; four were killed in 1935. The elk herds now number more than 1000, their welfare having been aided by the disappearance of an epidemic from which the herds suffered in the previous year, and from a decision to stop the cutting of timber in the elk territories, with the result that the herds, formerly compelled to emigrate, were able to winter in their established districts.
