ROTARY ESSAY

RESULTS ANNOUNCED

The final results of the annual Rotary essay competition conducted by the Palmerston North Rotary Club are now to hand from the judges, the Rev. J. Hubbard and Mr. Rowland Bailey. The prize awards in respect of the Palmerston North Boys' High School and Technical School were announced at the break-up of those schools, but it was not possible owing to the infantile paralysis outbreak to have the usual public function for the Girls' High School, and the, prize awards for this school are announced now. The subject of the essay was: "Methods by which a Lasting International Peace Might be Established." Results are:—

. Form Vl.—Justine Smith, 1; Maynie Reid and Jean Ferguson (equal), 2.

Form V.—Avis Mary Dry, 1; Phyllis Shearer, 2. . . , June Reid (Form VI), Alison.Black and Mar lie Whyte (Form V), were commended by the judges. The judges' remarks indicate that the essays, as with the Boys' High School and Technical School entries, were of a high standard, and the, knowledge of international affairs possessed by the pupils was surprising. The judges offered the suggestion that if the adults of a country could claim the same knowledge of international problems, coupled with the same peacemindedness as the young students today, there would be less inter-country quarrelling to cope with. . : ■ The'purpose of the essay competition is to encourage a study of international affairs in the secondary schools, with special reference to the League of Nations, so reformed and revitalised as to remain the recognised body for settling world quarrels, thus endorsing ' the recent continued faith in the League expressed so strongly by the Governments of Great Britain and New Zealand.
