MERCANTILE LEAGUE UMPIRES
At the fortnightly' meeting jof-rthe Wellington Mercantile League Umpires' Association,. Mr. F. W. Mitchell cave the second of'a, series of lectures' on "Cricket From its Earliest Days." The chairman of the association,' Mr. J. Young, presided. In'his. first 'lecture Mr. Mitchell traced the game from the' time ,when-; it was played with a stone for a ball and a club for a bat and its gradual evolution through the reigns of the earliest Edwards to the Regency days, and the times when the nobility of England played the game' for wagers ranging from 50 guineas to 4000 .guineas a side. His secondI.lecture continued the story from then on to the advent of Ranjitsinhji. For both'lectures; which were eagerly listened, to, there were good attendances, and Mr. Mitchell was heartily thanked for his most interesting discourse. The final lecture of the series will be given on March 16, when Mr. Mitchell will continue his outline of cricket history up through the years and the Tests to the present day. r
