TRAINING IN HORTICULTURE
A reminder that young men were now being trained in Christchurch to undertake horticultural work for which in the past it had been necessary to import trained .men. from the Old Country, was given by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr. J. W. Beanland) speaking to delegates at the New Zealand Painters' Conference (states the "Star-Sun,".).. Mr v Beanland said that four .of the Qominion's leading horticulturists, had been trained at Kew Gardens, ■ those including Messrs. J. A.' McPherson, curator of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, M. J. Barnett, City Council Superintendent of Reserves, and D. Tannock, curator of-the Dunedin Gardens. The Mayor added that when ,he- was Home two years ago he called on the.curator of the Kew Gardens - and mentioned the names "of Messrs. McPherson, Barnett, arid. Tannock, and the1 curator pf the famous gardens, who trained the trio, remarked that they were "fine boys!" "Now, however, we have realised that we should do something for ourselves;" declared Mr. Beanland. "Mr: Barnett is training young men at the ' City Council nursery, and similar'work is being undertaken in the gardens by Mr. McPherson." Mr. Beanland added that the whole of the magnificent work carried out by the reserves department .was done for £12,000 a year.
