PAWNED MICROSCOPE
ALLEGATION OF THEFT

AUCKLAND, February 24.
A young surgeon-dentist practising at Auckland, whose name was suppressed in the meantime, was charged in the Magistrate's Court with stealing a microscope to the value of £15, the property of Otago University. He pleaded not guilty.
Professor Dodds stated that there were 19 microscopes at the dental school for the use of students. On December 15 he saw a microscope at a pawn office which he identified as dental school property. He was well acquainted with the accused, who had studied'under him.
George Latimer, pawnbroker, stated that the instrument was pawned by the accused in February, 1934, for £3. The sum of £7 4s was owing as interest.
Detective-Sergeant Walsh, of Auckland, produced a statement in which the'accused'admitted pawning the instrument' and" stated that he had intended redeeming it.
The accused was committed for trial, counsel stating that he pleaded not guilty as he would then have a definite date on which to appear. He asked for suppression of the name, intimating that he intended to ask the Upper Court to regard this as an exceptional case. i
Mr. J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., consented with reluctance to suppress the name.
