On appointment to a permanent commission from the Royal Air Force College, Cranwell, Pilot-Officer J. G. Fraser (Auckland) is posted to No. 13 (Army Co-operation) Squadron, Old Sarum.
Flying-Officer P. A. McWhannell, R.A.F. (Wellington) is posted to School of Air Navigation, Manston., . , '■
Flight-Lieutenant W. F. Pharazyn is posted to the R.'AlF.' Staff Course, Andover, for the Staff Course, with effect from January 19, 1937. •
Dr. J. W. Harding, formerly of Wellington, who has been for several years at Cambridge, studying under Lord Rutherford,'director of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge, is at present lecturer in mathematical physics at the Imperial College of. Science,. South ■Kensington. . . ■ ■ ,
Captain D. T. Maxwell, N.Z.S.C, has completed his two years' course at the Staff College, Camberley, and! is; now attached to'the Committee. of: Imperial Defence in London. He- expects-to return to. New Zealand with his wife and children in August, and to ■travel by the Orontes. ' '■ .' ' I Dr. George Lycn passed away suddenly at Clifton Court,' Branksom'e Park, Bpurnemp.utb, at the age. of 67: The funeral took place at Amberley, near Stroud. Gloucester. For many years Dr. Lyon practised at Ashburton, and he was well known in the district.
- Mr. R. T. C. Raine (Nelson) has derived benefit from his voyage to England. He is making his headquarters, with his brother, Dr. S. G. Raine, at Wimbledon. His programme is ah interesting one, for he is hoping to make a complete round of the-scientific."re-search stations and to follow all that is latest with regard to farming, largely from the scientific and agricultural aspects. Already he has visited one farm near Birmingham, which is considered to be the most up-to-date'in regard to mechanisation. Presently,- while en route to Cornwall to stay,- with relatives, Mr. Raine will visit...the. ScaleHayne Agricultural College at-Newton Abbot. At Oxford he will, make investigations concerning grass-drying—a subject in which he is particularly "interested. It.is his present intention to leave by the Akaroa on March 19 on his homeward voyage.
Wing-Commander C. R. Carr, D.F.C., A.F.C., from the R.A.F. Station, Gosport, is appointed Senior Air Force Officer in H.M.S. Eagle which is. to le~ave for China next month to take the place of the Hermes. The Eagle will leave Devonport on February 10 for Portsmouth to embark her aircraft. WingCommander Carr is a New Zealander, and was in the 6th Mounted Rifles, New Zealand Territorial Force, before becoming a flight sub-lieutenant, R.N.A.S., in July, 1915. He served at Vendome,-France, from 1916 to 1918, and afterawrds in North Russia; where he gained the D.F.C. He took part as a flying officer in Shackleton's. last expedition, and returned to the R.A.F. in 1922. In 1927 he was chosen to make an official attempt for Great Britain to win the" world's non-stop flight record, but after three .gallant efforts, in one of which his machine' came down in the Persian Gulf,' he was obliged to give up., _ '
