NAVAL OPPOSITION
U.S. SENATOR'S ARMAMENTS
PROPOSAL
(Received February 24, 11 a.m.)
WASHINGTON, February 22.
The Washington correspondent of the Associated Press agency states that the navy has decided to oppose Senator G. P. Nye's proposal that the Government should manufacture all arms except aircraft on two grounds:—(l) Confidence that the Department of Labour will negotiate a compromise which will eliminate the steel industry's opposition to the Walsh-Healey Act in a few weeks; (2) that preference in obtaining steel, even in foreign markets, rather than resumption of operations on an increased scale, had proved unsatisfactory in the past.
Senator Nye announced his intention of introducing legislation requiring the Government to manufacture all its own warships, guns, explosives, gas, and armour plate, but to leave aircraft construction in private hands. He said that all that the factories needed could be built or purchased for 23,600,000 dollars, which was less than the. cost of a single battleship.
