CHANGE IN PROCEDURE

A variation in the procedure lor men who are registering as unemployed for the first tulie has been made by the district employment officer of the Labour Department.

, With the establishment of the State placement service, the Department desires this service tp function as the initial enrolling office for all unemployed merL At the present time many, applicants for assistance from the Department report at the employment bureau in Buckle Street, and are then required to attend at the placement office in Howden's Building, at the comer of Wakefield and Farish Streets, to enrol, so that the placement service may explore the possibility of placing them in other work. If an applicant cannot be placed immediately in private employment and desires to apply for unemployment relief assistance until he can secure employment' once more, he is issued With certain papers at the placement office indicating that he is enrolled there. The applicant then takes these papers to the Kmployment Bureau, Buckle Street, where his application for relief work or sustenance is dealt with according, to. his eligibility.

Enrolment with the State placement service and regular calls with a view to securing private employment are essential conditions qualifying unemployed men for relief assistance. Fruitless visits to the Employment Bureau will be avoided if applicants for registration or re-registration as unemployed ensure that they have evidence of enrolment with the placement office before calling at the bureau.
