MAYORAL RECEPTION
A "NOTABLE FUNCTION
The Mayoral reception to the visiting, delegates 1.0 the . British . Medical Association Conference, which took place last night in :the., National Art -Gallery, was a notable function. There were'about six hundred people present, invitations having been issued by the president of the Wellington brf.ich of the B.M.A:, Dr.T. D. M.-; Stout, and Mrs. Stout, to many, well-known Wellington people besides-to all-the local doctors and their wives. Many very beautiful dresses and wraps were worn, and the majority of the menfolk wore their decorations, which glittered in bright, clear lighting.
The first .part. of- the evening was spent in the,main-gallery, where rows of chairs were arranged facing the raised portion at the , far end from where the ••speeches were. made. This platform was - decorated with lovely bowls of dahlias and cypresses in tubs. Cypresses also stood all-around the gallery. 'Mr. Leon de Mauny, Madame de Mauny, and Mr. Claude Tanner entertained;., the'gathering with some delightful;, incidental .music until the speeches began. : ■ The official party on the "platform" included the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop. Dr. T. D. M. Stout (president) and Mrs. Stout, Dr. R. H. Hogg (retiring president), the Hon. Peter Fraser and Mrs. Fraser, Sir Edmund and Lady Spriggs, Dr. S. D. Rhind (president of the Wellington division) and Mrs. Rhind, Dr. and Mrs. G. F. V. Anson, Dr. John Plimmer (hon. secretary) and Mrs. Plimmer, and Dr. J. O. Mercer (hon. secretary) and Mrs. Mercer.- Speeches were delivered by Mr. Hislop, -the Hon. Peter Fraser, Dr. Pi. H.vHogg, and after the presidential address,-Sir Edmund Spriggs presented the Hunterian Medal to Dr. F. O. Bennett,' of Christchurch.
A delightful buffet supper was served in the restaurant, three long tables being arranged down the entire length of the room. They were set with many varieties of: savouries, and decorated with lovely flowers of many varieties. Afterwards the guests had the opportunity of wandering around the galleries and inspecting the pictures, particular interest b.eing taken in the collection hanging in the main hall, which had all been lent by local doctors for the occasion, and included some very fine paintings.
