CUDDLE'S FAILURE
INJURY TO LYNCH LAW
' (From "Vedette.") MELBOURNE, February 16. Although Cuddle failed rather dismally in the St. George Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday, New Zealand had its reputation maintained as a breeding country, for Golden Promise won the Bond Handicap rather handsomely with top weight, 9.5. The four-year-old son of Limond and Lady Bentinck looked a picture and, at the finish was running away. Another son of Limond in Viceroy filled third place, with Upoko Ariki unplaced. It was quite a fair field, for Donaster, Alinura, and the Metropolitan winner Young Crusader were among the unplaced division. SENSATIONAL EPISODE. The St. George Stakes was won by Young Idea, the race providing something of a sensation, for Hostile, when in second place, lost his lead bag oust on the post. The bag fell on the wrong side, and as his rider, S. Martin, weighed in 131b short the stewards had no option but to disqualify him. Prince Quex, who is raced by Mr. W. R. Kemball. finished fourth and was placed third, but there was no, intimation of this for quite ten minutes. Accordingly many totalisator and place bettors had destroyed their. tickets, and when they discovered the position there was some frantic searching and a great hubbub. Young Idea, the winner, had the race in his keeping from the start. He trailed Cuddle for three furlongs and then went up to her with the greatest of ease. Cuddle was ridden by M. McCarten, L. J. Ellis being .indisposed She dwelt slightly, then soon made up her ground, but apparently she was feeling the result of the let-up necessitated by foot injury.' This was caused by a nail coming through into the quick of one of her hind feet. J. Holt supplied the winner, Young Idea, and also took second place with the imported Plymouth Sound when Hostile was disqualified. Plymouth Sound is a big bay horse and does not show so much quality as most English horses. T. Webster rode hi"' hard to secure third place, and, as Holt fancied him more than Young Idea, the .importation did not run up to expectation. Prince . Quex finished on' fairly well for fourth place and was placed third. He has been rather a disappointment of late but might do better on the big track at Flemingtoh. A RUNAWAY AFFAIR. ' The Oakleigh Plate was a runaway affair for the South Australian Aurie's Star. Little more than a pony, Aurie's Star was soon in front and careered over the five and a half furlongs in the record time of lmin 4Jsec. Little more than twelve months '"ago he was not known, but in' the meantime he has won eight, races ;in.eleven'starls,'commencing at the bottom of the ladder and going practically: to"-the top.'"A 101b penalty for his Caulfield and Williamstbwn successes ' takes' him to : 8.5 in the Newmarket Handicap, for which he is now favourite.' He will be troubled more down the Flemington straight, and Regular Bachelor, who finished a fast fourth on Saturday, for one will --be ■troublesome. ■ -Regular Bachelor will meet,Aurie's Star on- 51b better terms and the long-, straight also will be in -his favour.' ":'" "'..'.: ' " : Beechwood'was too; -tardy at the start on Saturday but was-going on well in second place. He has lost some of his early brilliancy but should stay better. Pamelus is another who will be a nuisance to Aurie's Star in the Newmarket Handicap., The. Queenslander is working extremely well at Caulfield and looks a 141b better horse than he was in the spring. J. T. Jamieson has had some worry with Lynch Law in Melbourne. The colt struck himself and it is unlikely that he will be able to run at Flemington. He is being kept to light work and swimming on the beach. • There was also a stir as to Country Party's eligibility for a maiden allowance in the Futurity Stakes. As the gelding was disqualified for the. Batman Stakes at Flemington and certainly had not won a race it was difficult to see how there could be any doubt. However, there was quite a commotion and the V.A.T.C. committee held a full meeting to decide in favour of the allowance. Ajax. a good Heroic colt, made nis record two wins in two starts at Caulfield. He is full of promise, but as he was receiving 171b from Lochlee, who was little more than a length away third, it is difficult to see Ajax beating the Veilmond colt in the Sh'es Produce' Stakes. Both are fine youngsters ' and it is to be regretted that Lynch Law will not be fit to take them °n' A SON OF RAASAY. After many attempts and failures Killaloe, who is by the New Zealandbred Raasay, won his first race in Sydney last Saturday: Killaloe carried top weight,- 9st, and just won. He was offered at auction five days earlier but no one wanted him at 225 guineas. F McGrath won- with the likely Heroic colt Publicity at Canterbury Park. - This fellow has been taken quietly but was lucky to win. He was back in the field early, but when the favourite. Sturdee, left the rails in the straight Publicity had a clear run through. , . J Pike is having an unlucky run with Timurkhan. He has saddled this horse three times lately for three seconds and has yet to lead in his first winner. . . . ~ The luck of racing is being exemplified by Verdonia, who has won two flat races since giving a miserable disolay and failing in a hurdle race. _ On both occasions he has been at a long price. At Canterbury Park on Saturday he beat quite a fair field over nine furlongs, .
