VALUE OF FIELDING
A correspondent ("Keenly Interested") writes: —"The statement made by the New Zealand captain in regard to fielding appears to me to|bo very stupid and shows that in some respects a change is needed -in .the method of
selection of a touring team. Fielding, instead of being taken up after selection as thq captain suggests, should really be the foundation of the team. No player should be taken who is not perfectly fit, just as in Rugby, and a proved man in the field. For this reason the inclusion of Donnelly, I consider, is very much justified. The selectors should banish the idea of selecting a team to win and endeavour to get one whose members are going to come back benefited by the great experience and, returning to play afterwards, will be able to help in building for the future. If this is riot the case then it is questionable if the tour is justified."
