FITNESS OF CARS

EXTENDED PERIOD

REQUEST TO MINISTER

The North Island Motor Union decided at its half-yearly meeting .in Wellington yesterday to make representations to the Minister of Transport (the Hon. K. Semple) for an extension of time beyond March 31 for the issue of warrants of fitness for motor vehicles, the date suggested being June 30. The reason advanced was that it was considered impossible for all motor vehicles to be tested'by March 31.

The union decided also to recommend to all automobile associations that they make application for permission to act as testing authorities only, the actual mechanical work involved in making vehicles fit to be confined to the trade. It was reported by the secretary, Mr. G Laurence, that under the agreement entered into between the automobile associations in New Zealand and the Automobile Association of Great Britain 1000 badges, as a symbol of federation, had been received and were being distributed among associations on a pro rata basis according to membership. The design is the twin A's surmounted by the words "New Zealand." The badges will be available for hiring to members for attachment to their cars. Messrs. 2. Grayson, Auckland, h. Palliser, Wellington, and G. Laurence', secretary, were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly meeting of the South Island Motor Union on March

Mr. W." A. O'Callaghan presided and delegates from every automobile association in the North Island were present. Messrs. W. R. Carey and P. Harvey, of the South Island Motor Union, and Mr. H.. Wynyard, motorists' representative on the Main Highways Board, were also present. The delegates, with the addition of the .Commissioner of Transport; Mr. G. Laurenson, and officers of the Main Highways Board, were the guests of the Automobile Association (Wellington) at luncheon, when Mr. H. W. Shortt, acting chairman of the association's executive, presided.
