SAND ON SECTIONS

EASTBOURNE PROBLEM

Eastbourne has a problem in supervising its seashore, for in parts there is erosion and costly seawalls have to be erected, and in other parts owners of sectioni are dismayed at the manner in which sand keeps piling up. At the meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council last evening a letter was received from the Eastbourne Ratepayers Association pointing out the encroachment of sand on a property on the seafront between Miro and Konini Streets. The association also stated that it was satisfactory to note that the groynes erected opposite the Muritai seawall had now had the effect of building up the oeach which in some places had reached the top of the planking on the groynes. In order to prevent the sand from being washed out it was suggested that the planking be extended upwards where necessary to ensure that the sand already trapped would not be lost in the future. It was also suggested that the Pukatea Street stormwater culvert be extended seawards to ensure that the flow of water was not obstructed by sand. Councillor C. H. Andrews said it p?s>tt not wise to devote attention to 'tsne isolated case of sand coming on to a section when there were other sections also affected. The Mayor (Mr. E. W. Wise) -stated that the case was by no means isolated. A councillor remarked that the only way to keep the sand in place was to extend the seawall until it covered the whole of the borough foreshore. An engineer will look into the question of sand piling up on sections. The council is also giving the matter consideration.
