SIT-DOWN STRIKES
"LAWLESS METHODS"
TO BE PUT DOWN IN
NEW JERSEY
NEW YORK, February 16.
A message from Trenton (New Jersey) says -that the Governor, Mr. Hoffman, issued a statement warning the Committee of Industrial Organisation that the "lawless methods and practices" used in motor strikes in Michigan and Indiana will not be tolerated in New Jersey. He said there was no doubt in his mind that sit-down strikes were illegal, and he was determined if necessary to employ the entire resources of the State to preserve property rights and punish any attempts to subvert the law. .
He said he issued the statement as a result of reports that the Committee of Industrial Organisation was preparing a unionisation drive among the State's industrial workers.
Replying to Mr. Hoffman, leaders of State labour unions, issued . defiant statements that they were prepared to invoke a sit-down strike if necessary, despite the Governor. They accused him of opposing all efforts to organise, labour and of standing guard over the State's sweat-shops.
