DAMAGE BY HAIL

Hail storms 'were experienced in various parts of the Nelson district on Saturday, there being some fairly heavy falls in the Motueka and Tasman areas, where damage was caused to tobacco and apple crops. The most affected areas are Riwaka and the Riwaka Valley, where tobacco leaf was bruised, punctured, and in some cases broken off with the force of the hail, which was about the size of large garden-peas. ' It is difficult to estimate the actual damage until the result of the bruising is more apparent. One tobacco grower at Riwaka considers that his loss is equal to three kilns of leaf—about £150. A variety of tobacco, named Special, which has a tender leaf, appears to have suffered most damage., The' storm was of about six minutes' duration, the ground being covered and the guttering on buildings was filled. Several apple crops in the Riwaka district were affected. It is understood that a quantity of the fruit will be marked to an extent which will preclude it from export. Several apple [ orchards were in the track of the storm at1 Tasman and a certain amount of damage was done to the'fruit, but fromj| early inspection it is anticipated the damage will not be of a serious nature?
