LIBRARY DELEGATES
AN INFORMAL RECEPTION
"AS A MAN THINKETH . .
In the "spacious'■ arid-attractive. Palm Lounge of the Hotel St.'George,'about 250! people were entertained last night, when the'chairman and members of the libraries committee of the Wellington City .Council, .in; conjunction with" the members of the local committee-, of the . New Zealand Library Association, "held an informal social evening to 'welcome delegates to the conference, which began this morning in Wellington, . . ' ■
The Mayor and Mayoress, Mr. and Mrs. T. C. A. -Hislop, and Councillor W. J. Gaudin (president of the New Zealand Library, Association) received ■the guests,- who were announced at the door by a" commissionaire.
Mrs. Hislop was wearing a little dyed ermine cape over a frock of black cobweb lace, and.-Mrs. Gaudin was dressed in ■ a gown of black and white patterned chenille lacelle.
Speeches of -welcome were made by Mr. Hislop and Mr. Gaudin, and these were replied to by two oil the delegates,' Dr. S, C. lAllen, of New Plymouth, and ■'Miss Emily A. Chaplin, ChTistchurch. Mr. Hislop -voiced what is, judging by the remarks constantly heard in .the libraries* '.a fairly general sentiment, when he mentioned the .enormous difficulty of finding something one wanted to read. "These days," said Mr. Hislop, "a spate of literature is being continually poured into the libraries and one -hardly knows where to turn to .find the things one wants to'read, and-the books one chooses, more or less at random, too often result in mental confusions and moral disturbances." He said that in his opinion the problem o£ selection was the foremost, problem to be considered at the conference. CHILD READERS. Miss Chaplin's remarks wore, of particular interest to women, as she $)oke chiefly about the importance of having a children's section:'iin>our libraries. "As a'man'th'inketh so he I.isi" she quoted,l and added" that it' might also be as truly said that as a man reads so he thinks. The value of library life to children could not be over-estimated and in,her opinion' every -t>ig library should have-a children's section.. Today, there was a great choice of books for children attractively got up and illustrated. Children were attracted foremostly 'by attractive illustrations and'these acted as an'inducement for them, to read, so that later on they became readers in1 the wider sense. She described the library with which she is connected in Christchurch. There a greater part'of a wing was set aside as a children's library and they had over'2ooo child'members, the'facilities being'free'to'them from the ages of 9 to 16.. Between the speeches the guests were entertained with items. Solos were sung by,"Mr.,T.'G. Hislop, Miss Grate Gaudin, and,Mrl Herbert Wood, f,heir accompanist being Miss G. Kerry.
