MAYORAL CHAIN

PRESENTED TO MASTERTON

(Special to tho "Evening Posr.—j

MASTERTON, This Day.

. An interesting ceremony at the Masterton Borough anniversary dinner last evening was the investiture of the Mayor (Mr. T. Jordan) with the handsome chain which is to be worn by the Mayors of Masterton. Placing the chain round Mr. Jordan's neck, Mr. W. H. Jackson, a former Mayor, said Mr. Jordan had earned the honour of being the first to wear this emblem of authority.

The Mayor was cheered and the gathering sang "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."

In a brief speech of acknowledgment, Mr. Jordan said he was sorry to find on the link reserved for his name the figures "1925-1938." (Laughter). When he showed this to two members of his household, they said: "We'have soniething definite at last about the job." One of them said: "I have always said you' would stick to the job till they kicked you out. Now perhaps you will take the hint." Mr. Jordan said he had made inquiries and had been able only to find out that the figures were not put there by any member of the present council. He had come to the conclusion that whoever put the figures there was a prophet or a thought-reader—perhaps both. Mr. Jordan said the Mayor of Masterlon was now badged satisfactorily. He hoped this emblem of office would never be lightly worn. (Applause.)

At a later stage, Mr. Jordan offered the thanks of the community to those who had subscribed the funds for the Mayoral chain.
