The King made his first state drive in brilliant sunshine to a levee at St. James’s Palace. Heavy rain suddenly ceased a few minutes before his departure and the sun came out. Hundreds lined the route, despite the uncertainty of the weather. His Majesty wore the uniform of Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards, and the blue ribbon of the Garter. Nearly 2000 persons attended the levee, including the Duke of Kent and the Duke of Gloucester. New Zealanders present included Mr. W. J. Jordan and Mr. W. Nash.
