FORMAL VERDICT

FINDING AT INQUEST KILLED BY FALL OF Jtß A finding that William Joseph Lawrence was accidentally killed by the jib of a crane falling on him in Courtenay Place on December 9 while he was assisting in the process of extracting sheathing from a refilled trench, was returned by the Coroner, Mr. E. Gilbertson, at the conclusion of an inquest today. Dr. Margaret A. Birks, house surgeon at the Wellington Hospital, gave evidence that Lawrence was admitted to the hospital at 2 p.m. on December 9, bleeding from a large scalp wound on the left side at the back of the head and from the left ear. He was deeply unconscious, and died at 9.30 next morning without regaining consciousness. His head injuries involved a fracture at the base of the skull with laceration of the brain. These injuries were consistent with his having been struck with the jib of a crane. .
