LIVESTOCK VALUES

GENERALLY FIRM

EASING TENDENCY

' 'Values for livestock generally are firm with an easing tendency at some sales- Both beef and mutton eased at. the Burnside stock, sale yesterday, but fat lambs were in good demand and prices remained firm. A considerable increase in the beei yarding' at Westfield yesterday had no detrimental effect on the higher values which have been maintained for the past three weeks. Ox quality was first class, and an improvement was observed in cow and heifer quality, although bidding fell away towards the close of the sale. '.Fair yardings of good quality sheep easily maintained late quotations, and an increased delivery of lambs -was- cleared under keen competition at firm rates. A full yarding of calves sold under a strong demand at firm rates-until late in'the sale, when values tended to ease. Pigs .were'more numerous and the quality was satisfactory. . Baconers realised recent values, but prices for porkers eased by. up to 2s a head. WAIRARAPA PRICES. Competition was not keen, there being passed lots in all classes. No station cows came forward, while a small yarding of cows ex dairy met with fair competition. The wethers and ewes yarded were, for the most part, of good quality, a few pens of unfinished ewes coming forward. Wethers sold well, but the demand for ewes was not great, competition. being only fair. There was a large yarding of lambs of mixed quality.. Prime quality lambs met with a keen sale, while medium and unfinished sorts were not wanted. FORDELL SALE. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., report a highly successful sale at Fordell yesterday, when an entry of about 9500 sheep was submitted to a large attendance of buyers. The1 very best lines of ewes seemed to be comparatively the best value. The two-tooth ewes yarded were not' quite so good as usual, none of the lines being first class. However, up to 38s 9d was realised for this class. Five-year ewes sold up to. 30s 7d for a line on account of Mr.' H. C. Addenbrooke, which was not quite so high as had been expected. The same vender's four- and six-tooth1 ewes made 38s 9d. A big line of fiveyear ewes, mouths rather short, condition only fair, made 28s. The sixyear ewes sold at surprisingly good prices. A large number of ewes with very indifferent mouths sold up to 24s 6d. which made the best lines seem reasonable. Lambs sold particularly freely and every pen sold at auction. Values were a fair bit above prices at the last few sales and decidedly in sellers' favour. A line of excellent w.f. wether lambs sold on account of Mr. B. W. Burnett, made 19s 2d. Store wethers averaged about 24s for just fair sorts.
