BOWLING

CHRISTMAS TOURNEY

WIN FOR HATAITAI

The final of the Wellingtotn Bowling Centre's Christmas rinks was won at Hataitai yesterday by a Hataitai Club rink skipped, by P. McWhannell, Perry's Thorndon rink, which won the tournament the previous season, being outed before the semi-finals by another Thorndon rink, skipped by Casey, which lost to McWhannell in the final. The last four games of the tourney had been postponed because of bad weather and the approach if the New Zealand championships.

A cool breeze handicapped players at times-yesterday, but the green was keen and the weather bright.

Casey gained an early advantage against Perry in the first game, and the game •' was virtually over after twenty heads. \ Casey won 24-15. A delayed improvement by Naylor's Thorndon rink was too late against McWhannell in one of the semi-finals, McWhannell scoring consistently and winning on the twentieth end Advantages veered in the other semifinal between Casey and C-imetti (Hataitai), but with Cometti 5 up and seven heads to play Casey won six of the remaining heads and finished 3 up. The final was interesting but not spectacular. The standard of play was good, and with nine heads gone the scores were even. McWhannell won the tenth and eleventh heads, but Thorndon went into the lead for the only time in the game by collecting a 3 on the twelfth. Hataitai scored a 4 on the thirteenth and 1 on the fourteenth, and after the fifteenth end were 8 up with six heads to play. The twenty-first head was not played, the ninteenth .being the only head to go Thorndon's way in the last four. At the close of play Wellings. No. 3 for Hataitai, who had been among the winners of a centre tournament for the fifth time, was presented with, the centre's gold medal by Mr. W. Gilbert, the president. Results: — Horwood, Springhall, Watson, M. J. Casey (Thorndon), 24; Hyams, Gibson, White, Perry (Thorndon), 15. Semi-finals: Wrigley, Josephson, j Wellings. McWhannell (Hataitai). 22; Johnson, Hardie, Nancarrow, L. Naylor (Thorndnn). 15. Casey, 19; Allen, Anstey Donald, Cometti (Hataitati), 16.
