WATER SUPPLY
FOR UPPER HUTT
Finality is now being reached in the steps being taken in the Upper Hutt borough to augment the water supply. There has been a serious shortage in past dry seasons and restrictions oh the use of water have been imposed by the authorities. The Borough Council obtained permission to use the well on the Trentham racecourse, provided a chlorinating ' plant was installed, and this supply has been used to augment the borough supply in the summer. The Wellington Racing Club has given the council permission to sink a well on the racecourse property and, the Health Department's permission having also been obtained, the council will go ahead at any time now. Mr. A. C. Day, who has been consulted by the council, will give his opinion on whether a permanent supply of water is available, and Dr. F. S. Maclean, of the Health Department, will decide whether the water is fit for human consumption. The council already has a chlorinating plant. It is thought that the necessary pumping plant will have to be imported from Britain, so it is unlikely that if the well is passed it will be ready until next summer, but as there has been plenty of rain this summer, and there is no shortage in winter, the delay should not be serious.
Head injuries and slight concussion were received by Robert Hutchinson, a newsagent, of Eastbourne, when he was knocked down on the Muratai road about 10.45 o'clock last evening by a motor-car. He was taken to the hospital.
