BoWling Notes

GREENS IN GOOD ORDER

CLUB GAMES PROGRESS

Although all Wellington greens were subjected to heavy traffic during the first two weeks of January, they were in excellent order for the fifth round of the pennants last Saturday, the occasional showers of rain experienced earlier in the month giving the grass a good chance. The light winds and hot sun made the surfaces keen, and bowlers ha.l to be rareful not to get too much length. Club competitions are progressing well and will go ahead rapidly this week if the weather remains suitable.

In the club games several of the young players have been showing to advantage, and if the form shown in some cases is improved there will be some changes at the top of the ladder in future seasons. S. Gray, who played lead for the runners-up in the Dominion rinks championships, proved that a young man with an aptitude for the game can become a good player in a few seasons, and his success should lead others on to the green. The main difficulty confronting young players at the present time is the number of players already occupying the greens, but it is probable that green room will be found for likely converts to the game.

There are still two rounds to be played in the pennants. The sixth round will be played next week and two days have been set aside for postponements. As the third round is the only postponement to date there should be no difficulty about completing the competition in good time. Several fixtures of interest to bowlers are still to be played, and it is understood that a large number of returned soldiers are" practising assiduously for their tournament. There is one more oneday tournament this month two in March, and one in April. In addition there are the Easter fixtures and some local bowlers will probably visit Blenheim and Nelson at that time. Both centres are popular and the hospitality of the South Island bowlers is well known.
