BEETHOVEN'S ROMANCE.

Arthur Watkyn, the author of 'Muted Strings" (Beethoven's romance

with Giulietta Guicciardi is its theme), is the son of an Eastbourne (England) bank manager; "Muted Strings" is his first play. It was produced ia the West End. recently with Keneth. Kent as Beethoven. Mr. Kent is a fine actor, whose work as Napoleon in "St. Helena" was outstandingly excellent. "Muted Strings" covers the period from 1801 to 1824; in the first act Beethoven is shown as already threatened with deafness, and renounces marriage for the sake of his work. Jane Baxter. who was in "Blossom Time" and. "The Private Lives of Henry VIII," andwho is a popular London actress, played Giulietta. Violet Vanbrugh (sister of Irene Vanbrugh, who visited New Zealand with her husband Dion -Boucicault a few years ago), played- the Countess- of Brunsvik, Isobel Elsom (who was in Australia in a series of light comedies^ but. did n6t -come to New Zealand), was Princess Lichnowsky, Allan Aynesworth-was^-Herr-Na-geli, and Maurice Browne (producer of the play) was Dr. Schmidt. .
