ASSOCIATION FERNS. ~One of the best games seen in this competition for some time \ was that played between the Ngaroma Club, represented by Mesdames Miller and Kerr, against the Island Bay Club, represented by Mesdames Small and Coe. The two Ngaroma Club players were playing well, and while the shooting of both was excellent, this did not surpass the break play which was a feature of the match. The game was over in a very short time, the score being 26-7 in favour, of the holders. The next on the list of challengers is the Hataitai Club, when the match will be in charge of Mrs. Manton, of Wellington Club. McKENZIE CUPS. The cups again changed hands last week, when the Mount Victoria Club, represented by Mesdames Burbidge and Krebs, defeated the holders, Island Bay Club, represented by Mesdames Key and Francis. The game was fairly even throughout, and it was only at tnc finish that the Mount Victoria players drew ahead to win by the small margin of three points. The next on the list is the Hutt Club, the game to be in charge of Mrs. Walker, of Woburn. KING BROOCHES. The King Brooches were played for on the Woburn lawn' recently against Ngaroma, the holders, Mesdames Sutcliffe and August, again being successful in resisting the challenge. The challengers were finding the green somewhat fast, and consequently gave away opportunities. The match was won by a margin of eight points. The next on the list to challenge is the St. Augustine Club. WELLINGTON PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT. The seventeenth annual tournament ,of the Wellington Association will com- . mence at 9.30 a.m. cr* Tuesday, February 9, and will be held on the Waimarie, Hutt, Woburn, Central, and ■Ngaroma Clubs' lawns, where eleven greens will be available. McCreath, of Gore, being elected to that office. Mr. McCreath, who for many years has been taking a keen interest in affairs pertaining to croquet in New Zealand, has been a past^president of the Southland Association, and is at present association referee and handicapper. Mr. McCreath has a wide knowledge of the game, and is a scratch player who takes part in most of the council's official tournaments. The office of president has been held for the last four years by Captain F. L. Hartneli, of New Plymouth, who, although not seeking re-election as president, still retains a place on the executive for one year as an. ex-offkio member. Captain Hartneli has devoted much time and thought to croquet interests during his term of office, and the mark of his efficiency as a leader is evidenced in many ways, one of these being the establishment of a fund for the specific purposes of sending a team overseas and for the entertainment of overseas visiting teams. His knowledge of the general management of internal affairs will no doubt be taken advantage of and prove most helpful. FLAYERS' MEETING AT CHRISTCHURCH. Following the annual general meeting of delegates, a players' meeting was held the next evening when there was an attendance of approximately forty players. As is usual at these meetings opinions are freely voiced on the various matters concerning the sport, and recommendations passed which are submitted to the executive of the council for consideration. At the meeting held recently many matters were discussed, the principal of which were:— 1. The order of play in council tournaments. 2. The handicap events. 3. The iriter-island contest. 4. Gazette distribution. 5. Line marking and use of appropriate shoes on the lawns. It was decided by a large majority of the players present that competitors generally much preferred handicap events to precede the championships, and a resolution to this effect was passed and will go before the tournament committee. For the last few tournaments' the championship events were the first to be played, and consequently competitors had not a chance to get the strength of the greens, and to "play themselves in," as it is a well-known fact that the more play one gets the more likely are the chances of striking form. This has proved a decided drawback to many of the players, hence the almost unanimous appeal to the council. It was also suggested at the meeting that the interisland participants, who are at present debarred from taking part in handicap events, should not be so restricted, and that the team consist of six players if possible. Matters concerning the Gazette were freely discussed and warm appreciation of the work done by the Gazette editor-manager was expressed by several of the speakers. The Gazette, which is each year gaining in popularity, has a large circulation, and it was suggested that instead of sending individual copies through club secretaries, by the payment of an extra small sum, these can now be posted direct. Much time will thus be saved, and should prove a much more satisfactory method of distribution to many subscribers. ENGLISH GOLD AND SILVER MEDALS. The English gold and silver medals competition was concluded on Saturday last at Timaru in fine weather with a strong north-west wind. The winner proved to be Mr. J. Tannock, Duhedin, who only lost one game throughout the tournament, and that owing to his absence. The winner of the silver medal was Mr. W. H. Kirk, Timaru. The president of the South Canterbury Croquet Association, in the absence of Mr. R. W. McCreath,' president of the New Zealand Croquet Council, congratulated Mr. Tannock warmly on his wonderful performance, and his excellent play throughout. The manager (Mrs. D. McLennan) endorsed his remarks, and the players joined in giving Mr. Tannock a hearty send off, ALTERATIONS TO HANDICAPS. The following alterations to handicaps are confirmed by Mrs. G. B. Bartlett, New Zealand handicapper, following the North Island championships recently held at the Hutt and Petone:— F. L. Hartneli, from -1 to -li. Mr. Bennett (Hastings), from 6 to 5. The many friends of Mrs. Hallam (Lyall Bay) extend to her deep sympathy in her sad bereavement. Mrs. Winchcomb (Island Bay) is at present on a motoring tour of the North Island, and will be absent for about three weeks. Mrs. Billing (Wellington),, who has been spending a few weeks at Timaru and Lake Wakatipu, has returned home. Mrs. Watkins (Hastings) is at present in Wellington, staying with Mrs. Lowery, Karori.
