The Minister of Justice (the Hon. H. G. R. Mason) arrived in Wellington from the south this morning.
The Hon. G. R. Hunter, M.L.C., was a passenger to Wellington by the Wahine this morning.
The Rev. A. B. Kilroy returned to Wellington by the Wahine this morning.
Mr. A. E. Hefford, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, is visiting Christchurch.
Mr. M. O'Brien, New Zealand Commissioner at the Johannesburg Empire Exhibition, is to visit Tanganyika and Kenya to investigate the growing and milling of sisal for rope-making.
Mr. H. V. Mountier, telegraph engineer at Napier, has been transferred to Wellington. Entering the service in 1921, Mr. Mountier was first in the engineer's branch at Wellington, being transferred to Christchurch as assistant engineer in 1925. During the succeeding, nine years and a half he wa3 in turn in charge of the West Coast, South Canterbury, and East Canterbury districts, although still stationed at Christchurch. He went to Napier from Christchurch in April, 1935, succeeding Mr. H. G. Lakeman.
One of New Zealand's few remaining* war veterans, Major Frank W. Garner, celebrated his 89th birthday on Monday last (states the Palmerston North correspondent of "The Post"). ' He saw active service in Hawke's Bay in 1866-69, being first under fire when a youth of 19 years of age. He lived for 42 years in Hawke's Bay but-has spent the past 29 years in Palmerston, North. He is still possessed of all his faculties.
The Rev. S.F.N. Weymouth, who has been vicar of Whakatane for the past six years, has been appointed vicar of St. Luke's Parish, Havelock North.
On account of his appointment a3 one of the representatives of manufacturers upon the recently-constituted Bureau of Industry, Mr. Lan Matheson has tendered his resignation from the office of president of the Wellington Manufacturers' Association. At their meeting this week members of the executive of the association expressed their appreciation of the valuable worlc done by Mr. Matheson as president of the body and accepted his resignation with very deep regret. Mr. R. Barclay Smith was elected the new president, and Mr. W. McLay will fill the vacancy of vice-president so caused.
