GOLD CUP MEETING
TRACK IN GOOD ORDER
OVERCAST WEATHER
(By "Kang-atira.")
The weather is overcast for the first day of the Wellington Trotting Club's Gold Cup Meeting at Hutt Park today. Conditions are pleasant, however, and the track is in good order. The betting is under the win-and-place system, with the lowest unit 10s. Since the last meeting a new concrete structure has taken the place of the old stewards' quarters, which has :,. greatly improved the social amenities of the club. ' For a midweek day the attendance "■ was large. The fields throughout are . of excellent size and quality, the best secured by the club for many years, and competition in the earlier events >- -was keen. „,. Following were the results up to , time of going to press:— "PRELIMINARY HANDICAP TROT, >- £130; second horse £20 and third ■'■ £10 from the stake; 3.43 class; 14 - • • miles. 4—6—Mr. A. G. Farland's b m Franz -: ' Derby, by Nelson Derby—La Franz, aged, 60 (A. G. Farland) 1 "■l—l—Messrs. Durbar Lodge, Ltd.'s b g Gerfalcon, by Wrack—Nantwich, 3yrs, scr (L. Frost) 2 ■ 2—2—Mr. W. Hosking's br h Swordsman, by Peter Volo—Lydia Lee, 4yrs, 36 (F. J. Smith) 3 *■" Also started: 3-3 Tan John scr (W. '" Heginbotham), 6-5 Tommy Boy scr (L. •F. Berkett), 5-4 Great Sonoma 36 (C. M. Morrison), 7-7 Walter Wrack 36 (W. -.R. Butt), 8-8 Miss Leda 60 (E. J. Aitche- . son). Gerfalcon and .Swordsman shared ' the bulk of the investment in the ■ Preliminary Handicap Trot, but both 'were beaten, by Franz Derby, a double ' winner on the track at the Spring Meeting. Gerfalcon had control after ■a couple of furlongs, with Tan John alongside him and then a gap to Swordsman, with Franz Derby fast improving her position. Passing the stands on the final round, Franz Derby was only two lengths behind the leading pair, and she was running on the favourite's sulky wheel at the halfmile, where Swordsman also began to improve his place. In the dash down the straight, Franz Derby outstayed Gerfalcon to win by a length, with Swordsman, who finished in a break, just failing by a head for second. Tan John was a good fourth, with the others, who all made mistakes, well "'back. Times, 3min 24 l-ssec, 3min 29 2-ssec, 3min 26 3-ssec. (Winner trained by owner, Palmerston North.) GRACEFIELD TRIAL. HANDICAP, £130; second horse £20 and third £10 from the stake; 3.43 class; 1-J . miles. - 9—B—Mr. J. Bell's blk m Black Marble, by Nelson Derby—Grattan Derby, syrs, scr (J. Bryce, jun.) 1 2—3—Mr. M. C. McTigue's b g Dark Hazard, by Great Bingen—Wild Nita, 3yrs, scr (M. C. McTigue) 2 7—6—Durbar Lodge, Ltd.'s, b f Santa Fe, by Wrack—Nell Pointer, 3yrs, scr (L. Frost) 3 Also started: 10-10 Lady Slipper scr (E. A. Berry), 5-4 Kia Kaha scr (E. N. Kennerley), 6-9 Ray Queen scr (L. F. Berkett), 12-12 De la Paix scr (C. S. Donald), 7-7 Sewana scr (L. O. There was another double-figure dividend, better than in the opening ■ race, when Black Marble found the .. post a welcome sight in the Gracefleld Trial Handicap. The big field was sent away to a good start, but the favour- ■ ite, Ace High, was off the course go- ■ ing out of the straight, and retired very ■..quickly. Ray Queen settled down to make the pace from Black Marble, • Dark Hazard, Santa Fe, Starwyn, and •• Stepson. There was not a great deal ■..of variation in the running till Ray '. Queen tired at the end of a mile. Then Black Marble cleared away, with Dark '. Hazard, Santa Fe, and Starwyn in pursuit, and after being three lengths in . front entering the straight, she hung on • just long enough to beat Dark Hazard by half a length. Santa Fe was a length and a half back third, with Star- ' wyn, many lengths away, fourth. Ray ..Queen, Wynan (who was slow away), ' De la Paix, and Sewana were nearest 'of the others. Times: 3min 22 2-ssec, 3min 22 3-5 sec, 3min 23sec. 1' (Winner trained by L. Aide de Camp, after making up his handicap, passed round the field along the back the final time, and smothered 'his opponents with his pace in the straight. It was " another good dividend, just short of double figures. used her speed early to reach 'the front at the end of three furlongs, • and she then piloted Allworthy, Precious Metal, Vanity Fair, Superior Rank, and Eastern Prince past the stands at the end of the first round. "Glorietta lasted till the straight, but then retired, and Aide de Camp raced 'to the front to win easily by three lengths from Superior Rank, who came home resolutely after losing his position along the back the last time. Vanity Fair, got through a gap on the fence for third, a neck back, and then in a heap came Vinco, Allworthy, Glorietla, Frisco .Boy, and Eastern Prince. Frisco Boy put in a brilliant run in the straight, to reach second, but broke badly half a furlong from the post. Times, 3min 18 2-ssec, 3min 21sec, 3min 21 l-ssec. (Winner trained by E. A.
