SUMMER FLOWERS

DISPLAY AT MIRAMAR

A successful gladioli show was held in the Miramar South School on Saturday by the Miramar and Eastern Suburbs. Horticultural Society. The entries exceeded all expectations, the gladioli section alone showing an increase of over 60 entries, compared with last year, and the blooms were of a much higher quality than any previously shown in Miramar. Keen competition was experienced from members of Hutt. Petone, Khandallah. and Karori societies. Mr. J. T. Townson, president of the society, introduced Mr. H. H. Miller, secretary of the Wellington Horticultural Society, who officially opened the show. Mr. Miller congratulated the exhibitors on the quality of the blooms. The champion spike in the amateur gladioli section was a beautiful one of "Canberra," grown by lv.-r. G. valk. Lower Hutt. In the novice section the champion spike was grown by Mr. A. Harper, of Broadway, Miramar. The British Gladioli Society's certificate for most points in all gladioli classes was also won by Mr. Harper. Other trophies were won as follows: —Mrs. Flan's trophy for members of the Miramar Horticultural Society, P. F. Lister; Mr. Fox's trophy for begonias, D. E. Maxwell; 'Mr. Soanes's trophy for most points in pansies and violas. Mr. D. Lawson; Griffiths's trophy for gladioli, Mr. G. Valk; Mr. Soanes's trophy for carnations, Mr. H. Welch; society's trophy for decorated table, Mrs. Fevre; Mr. Soanes's trophy for gladioli, W. E. Askwith; society's trophy for most points for dahlias, Mr. H. Jones; Mrs. Deans's special trophy for children's cooking, Jean Maxwell. Mr. A. Soanes, Chnstchurch, judged the flowers and vegetables, and Miss E. A. Beagley was judge .of the miscellaneous, decorative, and children's sections. The following is a list of the awards: Gladioli.—Amateur: W. E. Askwith, 3 firsts, 2 seconds; G.
