TWO. OUTBREAKS

FIRES IN SAWMILL'

Twice within twelve hours the. Wellington Fire Brigade responded to calls to attend fires which broke out in the premises of Millar's Timber and Trading Company (Overseas), Ltd., at 85 Taranaki Street. The first outbreak occurred at 7.27 p.m. yesterday, a fire starting in the third storey of an outhouse containing machinery, some dust impregnated with oil becoming alight, presumably through the overheating of a motor bearing. Only slight damage was done, the fire being extinguished with a bucket pump.

At 5.10 a.m. today another call was received to the same premises to extinguish a fire which broke out on the ground floor among loose papers and shavings. This was extinguished by means of a hose. The origin of this fire was not ascertained, but it is believed that there was no connection between the two outbreaks.

Yesterday, with the hot'conditions prevailing, was a bad day for gorse fires, and seven, ranging from Island Bay to Khandallah, were attended and extinguished. There were three outbreaks at Wadestown and one each at Khandallah, Island Bay, Mornington, and Mount Victoria.
