"LACKED SNAP"
ENGLAND'S TRYING DAY
ADELAIDE, February 2.
C. G. Macartney, commenting on play in the cricket Test, says: "It is
difficult to see how England can "avert defeat. The wicket on the final day is bound to assist Australia's spin bowlers.
"Bradman's tenacity and skilful manipulation of all bowling and the support given by McCabe and Gregory place Australia in a happy position. The batsmen were definitely on top of the bowling, proof of which was Verity's resort to the leg theory towards the end of the day. Bradman seemed to adopt a policy of safety first. His restraint and discrimination were remarkable. No bowler could induce him to take a risk.
"Allen varied his bowlers and field placements to no purpose. The wicket is showing signs of wear and a number of balls kept lower than usual.
"McCabe gave a polished display and scored surprisingly easy boundaries from Verity. He again lost his wicket to a high hit on the on side which was apparently intended to go for a six. Rigg was far from impressive and was never comfortable. Gregory was sound in defence and obtained most of his runs from behind-the-wicket strokes. He is shaping really well, this youngster. England had a trying day in the field. Their work today, however, lacked snap."
