NELSON HOPS
SATISFACTORY GROWTH
(By Telegraph—Press As»ociation.)
NELSON, January 20.
Referring to misleading statements made in other parts of New Zealand regarding the hop crop this season, Mr. F. O. Hamilton, director of Buxtons. Ltd;, a firm which deals largely in hops and tobacco, says that, although Nelson had shared with the rest of the Dominion in experiencing more rainfall during the past few months than usual, the weather had not materially affected hop growth up to the present time.
"It is usual," said Mr. Hamilton, "in a good season for the vine to be at the .top of the wire by Christmas, and this year growth is satisfactory and, provided there is a reasonable amount of sunshine between now land picking time, which will be fromj the end of February, the crop should be well up to the average and. of good quality. The growth of the plant has not yet reached the critical stage, and as we are evidently following last summer in England, when weather were similar to those we have experienced during the past two months and | the latter end was warm and dry, it is hoped that the law of averages will also favour us with similar conditions here."
