The "stars" have again been successfully defended by the Upper Hutt Club, whose representatives, Mesdames Greig and Harper, defeated the Ngaroma Club, represented by Mesdames Sargisson and Fairley, by the small margin of four points. The game was even throughout, all four clips being on rover <,hoop at the same time. The. next on the list is the Central Club. Mckenzie cups. •The 10th round for the cups was played last week when the Island Bay players were again successful in defending the challenge. On this occasion the Eastbourne club were challenging, and were represented by Mesdames Keys and Everitt, the play- : ers for Island Bay being Mesdames ■ Francis and Hutchings. The. East- • bourne pair found the greens much heavier than those of the Bay greens i and consequently were not able to overtake the good lead established by the opponents, the score ending 26-6 ( in favour of Island Bay. The referee i in charge of the game was Mrs. Chet- ; ■Win. The next on the list is the Wo- , burn Club when Mrs. Fairlie will act j as referee. ( NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. . The North Island championships just ] concluded have proved a most interest- j ing event, and attracted a large num- ] ber of spectators daily. Excellent < play was witnessed in the final stages , —all round breaks being a feature of i each match. Among the players who ] were playing to form were Mesdames 1 Anstis, Gambrill, Caldow, Burrett, ; Henderson, and Miss Washer, A. J. j Gibbs, and F. L. Hartnell, and the < majority of these players are now tak- ] ing part in the Dominion champion- : ships being held at Christchurch. The ] weather throughout the tournament < was for the most part unpleasant and ] on the final days the lawns were sodden and heavy, necessitating physical ! strength rather than skill. The follow- 1 ing is the list of winners:— I Open championship.—Mrs. D. C. < Henderson (Wellington). 1 Runner up.—Mrs. W. E. Caldow < (Wellington). i Championship doubles. — Mrs. < Mathewson and W. Tye. i Runners up.—Mesdames Caldow and j Henderson. < Ladies* championship.—Mrs. Gam>"brill (Palmerston North). Runner up.—Mrs. Anstis (Palmers- c ''North). (

j Handicap doubles. —Mr. and Mrs. Bennett (Hastings). Runners up.—Mesdamos Caldow and Beveridge. Handicap singles.—E. Managh (South Auckland). i Runner up.—Miss E. Washer (Patea). Handicap singles, No. 2 section. — Mrs. Colquhoun (Palmerston North). Runner up.—Mrs. Piper (Hutt). SUGGESTIONS FOR ALTERATIONS TO LAWS. The following suggestions have been brought forward by Miss D. D. Steele (delegate for Bedford), and after being discussed at a preliminary meeting of the English Council will now go to a further meeting for a final decision. 1. That the clause in etiquette, "Interruption of adversary" be incorporated in the laws. The clause be added to law 27, and the words "should not" be changed to "may not" and the suggested penalty for a breach of the law was that the striker be allowed to lift and place his ball in contact with any other ball on the court and continue his turn as though commencing from that point. (Voting 8 for and 10 against).

2. That "Inadvertence be abolished." ■ The club held that all inadvertent 1 movement of balls in play should be 1 treated as fouls. They regarded the I present laxity as a cloak to cover lapse i of concentration in the striker. This . doing the game no good and unless J there was a tightening up they could ' not get younger players to join up. ' (Voting 9 for and 9 against). ' 3. That "playing with the wrong ball ' be a foul." At present the striker often would not be penalised at all and might get an extra turn. Colours were sufficiently distinctive and a striker, if in doubt could always coni suit his adversary. Such errors seldom occur in first-class opens, so inattention and carelessness could be overcome. (Voting 10 for and 8 against). PERSONALS. Mrs. Clark (Wellington), has returned from a visit to Hastings. Mrs. D. C. Henderson will be partnered with Mr. H. P. Stratton (Hastings), in the champic/iship doubles at the Dominion tournafrient. Mrs. W. E. Caldow (Wellington), who is at present visiting Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs. J. Palmer (Riccarton). Mrs. A. J. P. Brittain, president of the Hataitai club, intends leaving at the weekend on a motor trip through Taranaki. Mrs. E. J. Bassett (Masterton), is taking part in the New Zealand championships at Christchurch. Captain Hartnell (New Plymouth), and Mrs. Bartlett (Auckland), will be partners in the championship doubles at Christchurch.
