LAKE TAUPO GOOD
TONGARIRO POOR
The fishing in the Tongariro River has disappointed a number of visiting anglers including some from overseas, during the holiday season, said a Wellington angler who has just returned. This was due to the lowness of the river, most unusual at this time of year, and the presence of weed, which made fishing practically impossible. Moreover, the trout have not yet begun to run up the river with any freedom. What is wanted is a strong flood to clean out the weed, and encourage a run of rainbow.
Fishing in the lake, however, has been excellent, indeed the best for many years. The size of the fish is better than for some seasons. The best caught was 10£lb, but good, well-condi-tioned fish were plentiful. At the Delta the fish were lying about waiting to run. There should be good sport in the river later, if the weather is suitable. What was wanted in his opinion was a fresh to clean out the weed, followed by rain to raise the level of the river more permanently.
