YESTERDAY'S PLAY
Play was continued until late yesterday afternoon in the Wellington provincial tennis championships at Miramar.
Roussell showed his capacity for brilliant and erratic play against J. Neale, who was placing fast drives within inches of the lines and volleyed decisively from the net. Roussell double-faulted two successive match points at 6-2, threw away another match point at 6-3, and doublefaulted a fourth at 6-4. Oakley took Bedford to 8-6 in their first set, mainly on his driving and the use of drop shots. Bedford played passively throughout the set but took the second 6-1. Edwards played with' a new boardtype racket which caused him to overhit the baseline frequently in his long match against Waters. Edwards showed considerable enterprise at the net. Waters drove accurately. Some excellent hard-hitting tennis was seen in the matches of Charters against Pearce and against N. Morrison, both matches going to three sets. Pearce's fast service and backhand gave Charters some difficulty and Morrison showed good tactical play in forcing Charters out of position. Charters was superior at toe net in both cases.
Miss Bedford and Miss Warsaw had a hard and equal struggle in the B grade women's singles, both showing good form. Miss Warsaw drove and volleyed well but Miss Bedford was superior in her placements. J. Gallagher, who was driving excellently and varying the length, direction, and spin of his strokes, scored a hard-fought victory over K. W. Dyer, runner-up in the New Zealand plate, who was not showing his best form. The game was mainly a baseline encounter, with Gallagher taking the initiative. Double-faults in the early stages were frequent. , . , Miss J. Douthett had to work hard in her first set against Miss D. Maslem, who was driving well, but in the second set Miss Douthett's fine corner placements and her ability to come to the net gave her a comfortable victory, 7-5, 6-3. Neither Miss D. Nicholls nor Miss M. Howe had any difficulty in their roundte of the women's singles. The junior players, Painter and Robb, and Kelly and Doherty showed real ability in the first round of the men's doubles. Robb was very aggressive from the net, and showed a knowledge of tactical play in doubles. Jacobsen showed considerable promise, particularly in his ability to volley, in the first round of the boys' singles against the New Zealand boys' champion, S. Painter, but Jacobsen's service, which needs complete remodelling, let him down. A GRADE. Men's Singles. " Second Bound.—J. G. Gallagher beat K. Dyer, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1; N. Sturt beat H.
