ANNIVERSARY DAY

TOMORROW'S HOLIDAY

MANY ATTRACTIONS

The great majority of Wellingtonians observe tomorrow, Anniversary Day, as a holiday, and it fits in this year most conveniently with the five-day week and gives a long weekend. Hence quite a number of people, especially if the weather is kind, will venture far afield. The weather forecast, however, is not too good. Although it will be fine at first, conditions tomorrow are not likely to be so pleasant and strong north-westerly winds may be expected. Quite possibly, however, the rain will hold off.

There is no lack of entertainment for those who want it near at hand. The races at Trentham will naturally claim their thousands, and a somewhat smaller contingent will go to Ashhurst for the races there. Practically ever since the city of Wellington had its foundations laid in 1840, Anniversary Day has been celebrated by a regatta, and tomorrow will be no exception to the rule. Evans Bay will see yachts of all classes, and motorcraft of all types, assembled for the big event of the year in local yachting circles,

On the Basin Reserve representatives of the Wellington Cricket Association and of the Wellington Mercantile Cricket League will be trying conclusions, and on other grounds other friendly matches will be played. Lawn tennis enthusiasts will naturally make for Miramar, but all club courts are sure to be occupied all day. Bowlers will be competing in one-day tournaments on their various greens, and summer golfers will be on their favourite links. The sports meeting at Otaki is likely to be a well-patronised fixture.

The excursion to Picton by the Rangatira will be the popular draw that it always is. In addition to the beautiful scenery of the Sounds, excursionists on this trip will have speedboat races at Picton to entertain them.
