When fishing from the Orakei Bridge With other children, Norman Richardson, aged 12, fell from the bridge railing andi was carried "out by a strong tide into the harbour. He was unable to swim, but managed to : keep afloat. Unsuccessful efforts were made by his companions to throw a rope. The screams of the children the attention of a woman, who waved to a passing motorist, L. W. T. Parlby, an employee of the Auckland Transport Board. He threw off his coat and dived from the bridge and, being a strong swimmer, was able to rescue the boy, who responded to resuscitation and was driven home.
