SWIMMING
WELLINGTON CENTRE
A meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was held last evening, Mr. D. S. N. McCartney presiding. The Auckland Centre wrote stating e that it proposed to invite Miss E. de Lacy _ (fastest woman free-style swimf mer in the British Empire and semi- - finalist at the Olympic Games) and a . male middle-distance title-holder, to be selected by the Australian Swim- >. ming Union, to appear in Auckland, r The centre asked if Wellington wished to participate in the tour. It was decided that as the New Zealand Swimming Council is going fully into the - matter the centre would leave it in 2 the hands of tnat body. s As a deficit was suffered at the - swimming carnival at which the Australian swimmers were present in Welf lington on December 19, it was agreed that the Otago Centre should be approached so that some monetary re- , lief could be obtained. Advice was re- , ceived from the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association that the junior national championships had r been postponed until a more satisfactory date, on account of the danger of infantile paralysis. Mr. P. F. Coira announced that the • New Zealand Surf Life-saving Associa- ■ tion had decided to hold the tour of ' the Australian swimmers. He said that some doubt had been entertained i on account of the presence of infantile paralysis, but as most if not all of the meetings were to be held in the open air there would be no danger. . Delegates decided that the rule stating that caps should be worn in waterpolo games will be more rigidly enforced in the future. Mr. W. H. Gerrie said that it was a very difficult task distinguishing between players. It was only fair to the officials conducting the game that caps should be worn. A swimming carnival was arranged for February 11, as it was hoped that on this date swimmers returning from u? na tt°nal championships would be i able to compete. The Norden' Cup ■ competition between Christchurch and J Wellington will be held on the same < day if the arrangements are satisfac- 1 tory. Messrs. McCartney and Coira 1 were elected as delegates of the Wei- 1 lington Centre to attend the annual £ conference at New Plymouth on Feb- ( ruary 5 at the time of the national E swimming championships. ' c A was received from the Evans 1 Bay Swimming Club stating that it intended holding a race from the clubhouse to the Miramar Wharf and back on February 7. The competition will be open to all competitors, and the first prize is a trophy valued at £3 3s. The following officials were appointed by the centre to control the event: — Messrs. W. Gerrie (referee and starter), C. Davidson, V. Allen, N. Oldershaw, A. A. Jenkins, A. Lawrie, and W. Bousfield (judges). f The water-polo draw for Thursday, n January 21, was announced as fol- a lows:—C. grade: Lyall Bay v. Evans a ay, 7.15 p.m.; Worser Bay v. Lyall Bay, a 7.40 p.m.; Hataitai v.
