STORMY WEATHER PREDICTED

Special forecast for Wellington:— Strong south-easterly winds, Increasing at times to gale force. Weather dull and misty, and rain probable.

The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today, is for easterly winds changing later to southerlies north of New Plymouth and Napier. Thence southward to Farewell Spit and Kaikoura south-easterlies may be expected. Winds will be strong to gales, and the force of a'strong gale will be reached in places. South of Farewell Spit ! and Kaikoura winds will be more variable in direction, but mainly between north-east and south-east, and they will be only moderate in force although increasing on parts of the east coast. The weather will be cloudy to overcast and in many parts stormy, especially from Nelson and Marlborough northward, and there will be much mist or fog about. General rain is probable, with many heavy falls and with some flooding, especially in the northern and north-eastern portions of the North Island. It will be mainly fair, however, in the west coast and southern districts of the South Island.

The northern cyclone was still centred this morning near Cape Maria Van Diemen, having moved only slightly since yesterday. It has intensified and expanded somewhat Strong easterly winds and gales have been accompanied by widespread, and in places heavyv rain in the northern half of the North Island. Thence southward to the Cook Strait area south-easterly winds have prevailed and the rainfall has been lighter and more scattered. In the South Island light to moderate and more variable winds have prevailed, blowing mainly from some easterly quarter, and the weather has been fair generally. By this morning, however, it had clouded over in the northern and north-eastern portions. Auckland had a dull day yesterday and drizzling rain accompanied a fresh south-easterly to easterly wind. The wind became strong during the night and heavy rain fell. It was still raining there this morning with a strong wind blowing from the east-south-east.

Wellington's weather was fair, 11.1 hours of bright sunshine being recorded. A keen and strong southeasterly wind blew all day, however, and it clouded over last night. After 8.30 a.m. today a trace of rain fell. Christchurch had a fine and sunny day with a light easterly wind. It was overcast there this morning, with a moderate wind blowing from - the east-north-east. Dunedin also had a sunny day. The morning was calm, and a north-east-erly breeze prevailed in the afternoon.
