RECEPTION IS PATCHY

Before the Auckland Meeting nothing had been working better than Reception, but in her only start at the fixture she failed to begin correctly and was soon in a hopeless position. On Saturday at Cambridge she was sent out second favourite in the Farmers' Handicap, and on this occasion she went away very smartly and was soon up with the leaders, taking charge with three furlongs to go and quickly establishing a three lengths' advantage. Nothing had a chance with her in the straight, and she won comfortably by four lengths. On the strength of that effort she was entrusted with strong support in the Visitors' Handicap later in the day, and again looked like being difficult to dispose of wh6n she left her feet going along the back the last time. Reception is quite a useful trotter in her class, but she is now getting back in the handicaps, and she may And it a little more difficult i to win in the future.

The brother to Southern Chief has been attracting attention at Addington, and this two-year-old colt gives every indication of developing into a particulary smart youngster. He is a fine pacer, and even at this early stage (says the "Press") he can produce more speed than many of the juveniles at present racing, while his appearance leaves little to be desired. If anything. he shows more quality than Southern Chief. This colt will race as Southland. Southern Chief's recent racing would suggest that he lias gone off, and he is being treated to a spell to give him nn opportunity to freshen up. His racing to dale has not been lucky, but he is a smart three-year-old vvho'sliould do well with more time.
