THE CROONER FAST

DUNGARVAN IN BEST FORM

(Special to the "Evening Post. - ')

PALTvIERSTON N., This Day. Though there was more than a suggestion of winter at Awapuni yesteiday morning, the conditions were DeUei than they were on Tuesday. The course proper, with'the flags in the middle o± the track, was available for fast woik, and there were a number of interesting gallops in which horses engaged at Trentham and at Ashhurst figured. I Pnssiblv the gallop that attracted \ most interest was that of the Wellington Cup candidate Dungarvan, but his companion, Cloudy Bay, who was to have joined in with him at the se\en furlongs, went away much too soon, and to all intents and purposes it was a solo effort on the part of both horses. Dungarvan. however, gave a very satisfactory display and he finished fast Another fine effort was that of The Crooner, who finished clear of vvna.flower and Bluffer at the end oi a fast five furlongs, The Crooner drawing well clear of the others over the last furlong. The Crooner will be ridden by H. N. Wiggins in the Wellington Stakes. MARTARA'S PROGRESS.

One of the earlier brigade on the track was Martara, who was trotted and cantered on one of the inside tracks. He looks fit and ready to give a good account of himself when next) hopped out under silk, and he appears none the worse for his Auckland trip. Patter (Chisholm) was responsible for quite an attractive effort over seven furlongs, recording lmin 38 J sec for the distance and pulling up well. Limbohm, with his owner in the saddle, was exercised, and later w. J. Broughton sprinted him six furlongs on the. course proper. He started slowlf but he gradually worked up to top speed and he finished very solidly. When he was pulled up, however, he was favouring a leg. Bodyline (S. Anderson) sprinted five furlongs on his own, and the little fellow was not wasting time in completing in lmin 5 l-ssec, after taking 25sec for the first two furlongs. He

mill race at Ashhurst on Anniversary £ Day, but no rider has yet been engaged i IO Cat«WM (A. McDooald), back after | fnSsrKtsMj 1 'jkt |rl Uked n it?Site an the weTghthe was reqUcforroboree 'was given easy pace j work by Chisholm. He looks well, and he and Patter are to make the Welling- ! ton trip. No riders have been announced for them as yet. . GOOD CUP TRIAL. Dungarvan, with W. J. Broughton up, was sent along over a mile and a distance. He started slowly, and after passing the mile post he took 15sec for the next furlong. At the seven he wab to have picked up Cloudy : Mansfield), but when he got there Cloudy Bay had gone. Cloudy Bay was all of twenty lengths ahead at the six furlongs, and smoking along in fine style. After taking Imm Usee for the first five, Dungarvan was going much faster as he approached the home turn, and he was reducing the gap. Cloudy Bay, however, never let up, and 'she finished well clear. Dungarvan's finishing effort was wondeifully good, the last three furlongs taking him 39 4-ssec and the mile lmin 50 4-ssec. Old Surrey (S. Anderson) had it on Silent Acre (L. A. Pine) at the end of six furlongs cut out in Imm J9sec, after a slow-run first furlong. The three two-year-olds me Crooner (Broughton), Wildfiower (B. Brown), and Bluffer (Anderson) were associated in a five-furlong flutter. The riders intended that it should be as "flat-footed" as possible, but after circling short of the barrier, Wildfiower got the best of it, leading from The Crooner to the straight. As soon as heads were turned for home, however, , The Crooner quickly collared the pacemaker and drew right away to win brilliantly in lmin ssec. ! Dawning Light (Broughton) was next on to the course proper, and she "dwelt ; not'upon the order of going" in cutting , five furlongs out in lmin 4£sec. She , was clocked to run. the first two fur- , longs in 25sec and the first three in 37isec, and she finished solidly. Orac (Brown) was given a round at a strong pace, which was about equal to even time. He looks well and he worked . well. Tosh (Anderson) and Tail Light (Brown) were sprinted three furlongs [ from the seven furlongs barrier, and [ they were clocked to' the half-mile I peg.in 36sec—a very smart effort. L Pango (Broughton), who will be at . Ashhurst on Anniversary Day, was gal- , loped a mile, being timed to run the i last three in 41 4-ssec. He looks well. Symcony (Broughton) was sent along » over six furlongs, and after breaking I 36sec for the first three furlongs she > was stopping a bit, requiring lmin » 19sec for the full distance. 5 The following riding engagements ; have been announced for Wellington:— l W. J. Broughton, Francis Drake, Geira, Karl, Haut Monde, and Fersen; S. Anderson. Only One, Southern Blood, and Nelumbo; C. Thomson, Tauniau; W. J. McDowell, Nightlass; H. N. Wiggins, The Crooner; J. Callahan, The Buzzer; . J. Winder, Wildfiower. g At Ashhurst, G. Tattersall will ride s L-nd Tax and Pango.
