MOUNTAIN STREAMS
ROPES FOR CROSSINGS
CORONER URGES NEED
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
ASHBURTON, This Day.
In returning a verdict that Samuel Delebere Barker, 21 years of age, was accidentally • drowned while crossing the 'River Clyde in the Rangitata Gorge on Christmas Day, the Coroner, Mr. Bathurst, at an inquest yesterday, said his opinion was that ropes should be used in a proper manner in crossing mountain streams. Mountaineering clubs should adopt regulations compelling members to take such safety measures, and if possible a safety device should be fitted to enable the pack to be- discarded quickly. The evidence showed that the three men in the party, the deceased, George Alexander Kelly, and John Pattle, were linked by ice axes and were, swept off their feet, Barker again losing his foothold after standing kneedeep and trying to join his companions. His pack was held only by shoulder straps and weighed 40 pounds. *
