GREAT EARLY SIRE
A great sire in the early days was Faugh-a-Ballagh (1844), a brother to Birdcatcher, sire of The Baron. His son Leamington was a stout horse who twice won the Chester Cup. Leamington went to the United States to become one of the "fathers" of the American thoroughbred.' He was the leading stallion four times—lß7s, 1877, 1879, and 1881. Iroquois, the Derby winner of 1881, was a son of Leamington (whose other famous sons were Enquirer, Eolus, Longfellow, and Sensation). These are all great names in American pedigrees. Faugh-a-Ballagh later went to France, where he was a very successful sire.
