A NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT

Syd Garrett, whose patrons in South Africa include Sir Joseph B. and Lady Robinson, had a phenomenal, run of success at the South African Turf Club's Metropolitan Meeting at Kenilworth early last month. His own horse Moonlit won the £4000 Metropolitan Handicap, 9 furlongs, on the first day and the £1000 Suburban Handicap, 1 mile, on the final day; and on the middle day he won the two principal handicaps with Mac Na H-Eiream (owned by Lady Robinson) and Quintet. Moonlit's double success in the two most richly-endowed events placed Garrett well on top of the winning owners' list for the meeting, and his cheque for £4671 was the largest ever paid to a single owner by the South African Turf Club. His training achievement was also an unprecedented feat, and one that is never likely to be repeated—always excepting the possibility that Garrett may do it again next year It is a coincidence that the meeting was held at practically the same time last month as the New Zealand Cup Meeting in the Dominion, where the Cutts brothers also had a remarkable run of success as trainers.
