(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
TAURANGA, December 28.
At about 6.10 o'clock this evening Mr. Charles Haua, about 60 years of age, when crossing the railway bridge over Tauranga Harbour, saw a train approaching from the Matapihi side, and, in order to avoid being struck, he jumped into the harbour. The incident was observed by people on the beach. Messrs. B. Sneddon, of Tauranga, and Jack Astell, a visiting yachtsman from Wellington, immediately put off in. a dinghy and picked up Mr. Haua, who was brought ashore unconscious.
Messrs. Campbell and C. Highet, of Wellington, and McMaster, Tauranga, tried to resuscitSte Mr. Haua, and worked for forty-five minutes without avail. Mr. Haua evidently succumbed to heart failure.
In his younger days Mr. Haua was a notable athlete. A few months ago he was caught in a similar position on the bridge, ori , that occasion falling into the harbour and being rescued.
