IMPROVEMENT TOMORROW
Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate to strong' northerly winds, but a change to southerlies by tomorrow morning. Weather dull, wet, and misty, with heavy showers at times. Improving tomorrow, with' temperatures becoming cooler. The general forecast foi' the Dominion as a whole issued at noon today is for moderate to strong north-easterly to northerly winds to the north—of Greymouth and Kaikoura. Light to moderate southerlies will prevail thence southward, and southerlies will extend by tomorrow over most of the Dominion. The weather will be cloudy to overcast, with mist or fog in. many places. Rain is probable,, with some heavy falls in the central provinces. An improvement is probable tomorrow, with temperatures ; becoming cooler. ' / During the weekend the weather was again characterised by rather rapid changes. On Saturday a siight depression, the last of a series, crossed the' Dominion, and was followed that night and on Sunday morning by an anticyclone of no great intensity. Meanwhile another and more active depression was crossing the Tasman Sea, and by this morning was lying across the central portion of the country. On Saturday and Sunday, although cloudy in many districts and with a little drizzling rain in a few places, the weather was fine, warm, and sultry. During last night and this morning, however, widespread rain was experienced, with some heavy falls on the West Coast of the South Island. Westport reports a fall of 71 points, Greymouth one of 127 points, and Arthur's Pass one of 361 points. Winds generally have been light. On Saturday a southerly change extended over the South Island to parts of the North Island, but by Sunday the wind had returned to the north-east.' This morning, although moderate to strong northerlies were blowing to the north of Greymouth/and Kaikoura, a second change to southerlies was in evidence in the remaining districts. Auckland's weather on Saturday was cloudy at times, but fine, with a light and variable wind. Sunday was overcast and sultry, with a light to moderate north-easterly breeze, and some light rain fell in places during the morning. It was fine again this morning, although there was some rain last night. In Wellington on Saturday, after a fine and warm day with a decreasing northerly wind, a light south-easterly breeze set in during the evening. This continued on Sunday until 3.30 p.m., when the wind returned to the north. The weather on Sunday gradually became overcast, a light shower falling in the late afternoon, but otherwise it was fine, warm, and sultry. The northerly wind had freshened somewhat by this morning, and the weather was dull with intermittent misty rain. On Saturday 10.1 hours of bright sunshine were recorded, and yesterday 4.8 hours. The rainfall at Kelburn up to 9 -a.m. today totalled 11 points. Christchurch on Saturday and Sunday had overcast weather with a fresh and raw easterly breeze. On Sunday there was an occasional very light drizzle. By this morning the wind had turned to the south-west, and light rain had been falling since midnight. Dunedin was more fortunate, the weather being fine on both Saturday and Sunday. A light southerly breeze blew on Saturday morning, but the wind subsequently turned to the northeast. By this morning, however, a southerly breeze was blowing again, and the weather was overcast with misty, light rain falling.
