MAYSON'S FINE PLAY
TOURNAMENT SURPRISES
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, December 27. Defeating two New Zealand ranked players in one day, J. T. Mayson, the promising young Auckland player, reached the semi-finals in1 the Canterbury men's singles lawn tennis championship. In successive rounds he beat Norman Sturt and A. D, Brown, both from Auckland, and now will play H. A. Barnett, second ranking player in Canterbury, for the right to enter the final. ■ ■ Other semi-finalists are:—C. Angas, defending champion, and D. C. Coombe, Wellington. In the women's singles semi-final Miss Dulcie Nicholls, Wellington, New Zealand champion, will meet Miss Irene Poole, and Miss Thelma Poole will play Miss Margaret Beverley, Waikato. With continued good weather the tournament, in which practically all competitors for New Zealand championships are playing, should be completed tomorrow. There were several surprises of less importance than those caused by young Mayson. Small and slight, Mayson hits hard' and accurately on either hand, volleys and smashes deftly and effectively,, and seldom makes errors in footwork.
