TRADE BY BARTER
PROPOSED EXTENSION
(By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received December 28, 11.55 a.m.) LONDON, December 27. i Compensation Brokers, Ltd., the new trade by barter organisation company, will not confine its operations to Germany but will extend them to Turkey, Rumania, Bulgaria, . and Yugoslavia where the normal trade is curtailed by currency restrictions. It is emphasised that the scheme will not involve the granting of new credits to Germany.or be employed to facilitate the production of armaments. It is also understood that the scheme is approved by British Dominion Governments in addition to the foreign Governments concerned. ( Germany normally buys a substantial quantity of Empire raw materials, notably wool, rubber, vegetable oils, skins, hides, and jute. All the efforts of that nation will presently be concentrated on obtaining substitutes for these articles but so far the quest has not been greatly successful. Therefore the barter scheme should be an advantage both to Germany and to the British Empire. Credits will be given to Empire merchants who will make immediate deliveries of raw materials against manufactures not deliverable until several months later. London city business opinion appears to be that in so far as the scheme checks the tendency towards economic nationalism it should mitigate the risks of war.
